Why would a single retiree without assets need an estate plan?Writer’s note: This blog series is meant to act as responses to “quick” questions you may have for attorneys. Think of these answers as a “quick” answer you might receive over coffee from your friendly neighborhood attorney.
Everyone needs a Power of Attorney and Health Care Directive. Even, or perhaps, especially people without assets. Beyond those documents, it may or may not make sense to add additional documents like a Will. Discussing your assets and debts as well as the important people in your life (family or potential beneficiaries) with an attorney is crucial.
Like the single person without kids, you may not need anything beyond a Power of Attorney and Health Care Directive. You may also need additional documents to smooth the transition for your family. An attorney can walk you through your options.
