Coffee with Claire #28 – Commonly Asked Questions Blog Series

September 20, 2018
Why should you hire an attorney?

Writer’s note: This blog series is meant to act as responses to “quick” questions you may have for attorneys.  Think of these answers as a “quick” answer you might receive over coffee from your friendly neighborhood attorney.

I get this question all the time.  And the best answer I have is an analogy.

If you have a leaky pipe, do you hire a plumber, or fix it yourself?  If you hire a plumber, it may be expensive, but you know it will be done correctly the first time.

If you fix it yourself, you might be able to find a YouTube video and do it yourself.  This fix MAY work.  However, if you did it wrong, or it was more than just a leaky pipe, you’re going to have a much bigger mess shortly.  And this time, the plumber’s bill is going to be much more expensive, because first she’ll need to fix your mess, and then fix the pipe.

It’s the same as hiring an attorney.  You may think the divorce, or custody, or Will is easy enough to do yourself.  And MAYBE you can.  However, it will be more expensive if you don’t do it correctly and need to hire an attorney to first fix your mess, then fix the documents.

An initial consultation may be free or less expensive than you would expect.  It will give you a much better sense of whether you can tackle the legal task yourself, or if you’d be better off hiring an attorney at the start.
