Coffee with Claire #25 – Commonly Asked Questions Blog Series

What is the Certificate of Dissolution?
Writer’s note: This blog series is meant to act as responses to “quick” questions you may have for attorneys. Think of these answers as a “quick” answer you might receive over coffee from your friendly neighborhood attorney.
The Certificate of Dissolution is a one-page summary of the divorce. It states parties’ names, former names, if there was a name change, and date the dissolution was granted by the court. It can be used in lieu of the J&D in certain cases as proof of divorce.
Like the SREDJ, it allows the parties’ more privacy so they do not need to share their 15-45 page J&D with every institution, person, and agency who need proof of divorce. It is always best to ask the institution, person, or agency if the Certificate of Dissolution is enough.
If you have questions about a divorce proceeding, please contact Claire Tralle to set up a free initial telephone call.
