Potential Roadblocks for a Caregiver of an Aging Parent (Part 5)
November 8, 2019
You’ve identified your aging parent may need help; then you had the difficult conversations with your parent.
You sought out resources and information; maybe you’ve even come up with a plan. But something didn’t go according to plan. Maybe your parent was insulted by the conversation. Maybe other friends or family thought you were overstepping your bounds. Maybe you’ve identified needed resources that aren’t available in your community. Whatever the roadblock you may have encountered, it doesn’t mean your journey is over. It simply means you
need to re-evaluate.
If your parent has declined your assistance, perhaps it was the messenger rather than the message. Sometimes difficult news is easier to hear from a “neutral” person – like a doctor or friend – rather than a child. Think if there is someone else who could lead the conversation.
If you’ve identified a need that can’t be met in your community
– contact the organization that could help. Maybe they know of a resource closer to home or can help think of options you weren’t aware of. Sometimes it’s a matter of searching for a different phrase or name and that can point you in a different direction.
Whatever the roadblock(s) you encounter (and there will be some), find someone who can help navigate them with you. Perhaps that is a friend or family member, or doctor, or other professional. Whomever
it is, find someone you trust who has your parent’s best interests at heart, but can also give you sound advice and can help you navigate when roadblocks do appear.
