Coffee with Claire #12 – Commonly Asked Questions Blog Series
March 28, 2018
What should I do if I’m ready to file for divorce?Writer’s note: This blog series is meant to act as responses to “quick” questions you may have for attorneys. Think of these answers as a “quick” answer you might receive over coffee from your friendly neighborhood attorney.

First thing is to call an attorney. They can help map out the divorce process for you where you live – because even within the metro/Twin Cities area, there are little differences between counties.
Second, look at your finances. Make sure you know where all financial statements and paystubs are. Make a monthly budget so you know what you can afford with your salary alone. If child support or spousal maintenance are needed, talk with an attorney about what those amounts might be.
Finally, talk to your spouse. If you haven’t already discussed the “D-word” (Divorce), it’s time. Don’t surprise anyone by serving them divorce papers at work. This will also give you a good indication if the divorce can happen by agreement, or will require court intervention.
